Twitter allows its users to send and receive 140 character messages called “tweets” to other users who have signed up to receive them. It is estimated as of Feb 2009 that Twitter has roughly 6 million users and approximately 55 million monthly visitors. This would put Twitter as the third largest social network behind Facebook and MySpace.
Setting up a Twitter Account
It is easy to get a Twitter account. Simple go to twitter.com/signup in your web browser. Provide your full name, create a username, a password and an email address. Enter the CAPTCHA words in the space provided and click the “Create My Account” button. That’s all there is to it.
Twitter Account Settings
The next step would be to login to Twitter and set up your account. Go to the Settings link in the upper right corner of the Twitter page. From here you can set up all of the options for your Twitter account. One of the important setting is your More Info URL.
It is recommended to get the best use from Twitter that you send people to a blog about you. On this blog you should provide free information that would assist your visitors in learning about your product and services. If you owned a furniture store you would have reviews of how furniture was made, how to take proper care of the furniture and so on.
The blog aids your visitors in getting to know that you care about your visitors and you’re not just there to sell them something. This creates a relationship between the customer and you. The One Line Bio is also a quick way to connect with your visitors.
Including a picture of you is a good way at connecting with visitors. In addition you can change the design of the Twitter page to match you companies colors or styles. You can perform a Google search for Twitter Backgrounds.
Connecting with Other Twitter Users
Going to search.twitter.com in your browser will allow you to search for people with common interests. So if you owned a store that sold shoes you might search, Nike, Adidas, Converse, running shoes, tennis shoes, etc…. Search one term at a time. Also running shoe and “running shoe” would turn up different results. Without the quotes twitter would search for the words running and shoe but not necessarily running shoe.
I found people on Twitter. Now What?
Once you locate people on twitter through the search you click on their username and then you can learn more about them. You can also follow them to see what else they maybe discussing. Once you follow some people you should start conversations with people from the messages they send and receive.
Soon you will have people following you as well as the people you are following. This creates a small community. Daily search for people with common interests and soon you will have hundreds or even thousands of followers.
