South Africa and the New Wave of Mobile Websites
South Africa is a leading country when in comes to the mobile internet. Due to a set of circumstances including generally low levels of internet penetration and very high levels of data enabled cellphones, the country is experiencing a revolution in mobile usage from just voice to voice + data related applications. The biggest mobile related application in South Africa is Mxit. It is a instant messaging related application rather an Internet site and is really well optimised for chat. Aside from Mxit there are also huge levels of wap downloads of ringtones and games. But both Mxit and Wap Downloads are essentially not websites – The biggest mobile websites in South Africa are the mobile operator sites, the big social networks like twitter/facebook and the main bookmarks/links on Opera Mini. There are also well publicised sucessful mobile versions of established websites – In particular Soccer Laduma.
But since mobile internet is the future in South Africa where are the big South African mobile web sites going to come from. To look at this it is worthwhile to look at the traditional usage of the web – I recently completed an analysis of the most popular web sites in South Africa. Some of the main findings are below: -
- Of the top 100 over 40 (including the top
are big american run sites (e.g Google, Facebook, yahoo etc..) - The big 4 banks are in the top 75 (standard bank and ABSA are in the top 15).
- There are a number of local news providers in the top 100 – the 24 network has 4 including news24, 24.com. fin24 & sport24 and there are a few others with one site each
- The 2 biggest local communities are mybroadband.co.za and bizcommunity.com
- There are 5 local ecommerce plays led by bid or buy and kalahari.net
- And the thing that I consider most interesting that there are no less than 8 sites which are either business directories or classified style sites which I will discuss more below: –
Classifieds are a great match for mobile as they represent very simple 2 way communication between service provider/seller & customer which is usually based around phone numbers or web messaging. Classifieds usually have 5 big areas – for sale, property, vehicles, business services and jobs. These are all covered by sites in the top 100. The biggest classifieds site in South Africa is somewhat oddly a local version of the international gumtree classified site. This is dominant in the Western Cape and has all the big 5. The biggest specific job site is careerjunction, the biggest vehicle specific site is autotrader, the biggest property specific site is private property and the biggest business services site is the yellow pages run by Trudon.
Only 2 of these 8 sites currently have a mobile version Junkmail and Trudon – These are both basic sites with search functionality which works if you play around with them. Junkmail also allows you to create a basic free ad although it is slightly basic in its functionality.
One recent site that has been launched in the mobile classifieds field in South Africa is AdAd.co.za and this shows the way that mobile classifieds/advertising could go. It allows people to browse and search but users can also manage/feature their ads, link pictures via MMS and run SMS based campaign of the mobile ads they have set up.

How much is 50mb of Internet on mobile?
On my mobile I get fair usage policy of 50mb a day for Internet, e-mail and bbm, How much is that? I don’t send e-mails or use bbm, all I do is go on facebook and twitter. I probably spend a total of about half an hour a day on both sites. Is 50mb enough for that?
50mb is quite a lot as this works out to 1.5Gb for a month considering some laptops supplied with dongle have a 1Gb limit (and a laptop!)
